What is Sant Jordi and why is it celebrated in Mallorca?

A bit of history

The festival of Sant Jordi is inspired by a medieval legend that has transcended time and borders. The story goes that in a small kingdom, a feared dragon terrorised the population. To calm its fury, sacrifices were offered to it, until one day it was the turn of the king’s daughter. When the dragon was about to devour her, a knight appeared – Sant Jordi – who fought bravely and defeated him. From the blood spilt by the dragon a rose bush was born, and the knight cut a rose and gave it to the princess.

Hence the tradition of giving a red rose as a symbol of love and protection. But there is something else that was added centuries later: the book.

In 1926, coinciding with the deaths of two great literary figures – Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare – 23 April was established as Book Day. It was the perfect combination: a day to celebrate both romantic love and the love of literature.
